Can i go from windows xp to vista ?

i have windows xp professional 2002 on my laptop which i bought 2007 or 2008 and came with vista basic . it was good until it crashed and i somehow deleted the entire windows software . by the way it was an acer . so i been having windows xp pro for about 2 yrs now but it looks old and its slow . i found my windows vista upgrade cd . i put it in the laptop and it asked me for my product key and i put it in and it says its invalid . i retyped it alot of times and nothing . can someone please help me do something about it or is there any other thing i can do . i just want anything but windows xp on my laptop . pleaseeeeeee let me know of anything i can possibly do with out purchasing anything . i dont have money for that i need a usefull laptop now . pleasee and thank you (:
